This one is easily on my favorite books of the year list. I’m already planning my next re-read. Each chapter bled into the next, each moment felt so real. I literally did not want to put this book down. Although, at times I had to give myself a break from this particular emotional rollercoaster. I wanted to savor the read almost as much as I wanted to know what would happen next. Henry lays everything out on the page: January’s life, her grief, the town, the lake, take center stage in this novel. The scenes in which January tried to make herself and others believe that she had it all together really broke my heart… and then Gus would enter the scene. Their banter put me back together. I didn’t start this one for the love story, but after I found it I could not let these characters go. Give me more lake towns and protective aunts and writing retreats.
No, seriously. Give me a writing retreat. Because I need to work on that.
This novel was so beautifully written that it hurt (in all the best ways). I will be on the look out for more from Emily Henry, but first, I plan to catch up on her other works. I should have read something from this author way sooner.
As always, I’m open to buddy reads! Find me @xleah2k13 on Twitter.
